Unhelpful Language

I have on several occasions praised Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid for making reasonable, persuasive statements on the Senate floor, concerning the nuclear option and other matters. However, in calling President Bush "a loser" to a group of teenagers in a civics class, Senator Reid crossed the line. According to the AP, Reid responded to a student's question about Bush's policies by saying in part "The man's father is a wonderful human being. I think this guy is a loser."

To his credit, Reid did call the White House soon after he made the statement and apologized, according to a spokesperson. Tessa Hafen said Reid offered "regret for the comments" and admitted "it was inappropriate."

I'm glad that the Minority Leader offered an apology to the White House. Frankly, the high-schoolers he was speaking with also should get an apology. They deserve more from their political leaders than adolescent name-calling.

I've got to agree. Definitely an inappropriate comment...accurate, maybe, but inappropriate.

Agreed.

But I can't imagine DeLay or Cheney apologizing for inappropriate remarks.

It was also refreshing that Reid wasted little time in apologizing, not waiting for a tornado to hit.
