Moving In

CNN is reporting that approximately fifty National Guard vehicles filled with the first wave of 1,000 guardspeople are swarming into New Orleans, forming a convoy trucks stuffed full of food, water, and medical supplies. They're headed for the Convention Center, where thousands of the city's residents are trapped and growing more desperate by the hour. Good luck to them, I hope they've got enough supplies.

[Update: Just getting some footage now of the president meeting with residents in a destroyed neighborhood of Biloxi, MS. Yes it's a photo-op, but it's something. For the first time in lord knows how long, this president is walking the streets, talking to people who haven't been pre-selected (I'm sure that was some of that, but not as bad as it usually is) to share the views of whatever "theme of the day" is selected. It's about time. He truly looked engaged just then, and yes, he looked upset. As he ought to be. I know I am. -- 1:29 p.m.]

[Update: Help seems finally, finally to have arrived in a big way at the New Orleans Convention Center. And the House passed the $10.5 billion spending bill, which the president will sign when he returns to Washington tonight. -- 2:05 p.m.]
