Nice Gesture

While some politicians have been ordering up plate after plate of crow for their own consumption after ridiculous comments and actions in the aftermath of Katrina (Speaker Hastert still gets the prize for the most plentiful helping), others are responding well, and generously. I commented yesterday on Senator Obama's statement, and today I learned of another important example.

Congressman Chet Edwards, who represents the city of Waco, Texas, has turned his home there over to a family of New Orleans evacuees, says the Dallas Morning News. Edwards and his family are currently living in Washington, where his children attend school. Widow Johnnie Marchand, 46, along with her son, daughter and two grandchildren moved into the Edwards house over the weekend; Marchand is volunteering now at the local church, which is serving as an evacuee shelter.

Edwards told the paper he'd stay with family or friends when he returns to the district, saying "It's a small inconvenience compared to what these people have been through."

He's right - and good for him.
